American chestnut played a significant role in Appalachian cosystems prior to its near extirpation by an introduced fungal pathogen. Current restoration efforts focus on breeding, transgenics, and multiple pathogens in a changing landscape. Those efforts, challenges, and successes will be discussed along with future opportunities for research and involvement.
